www.detdom.info Internet project’s participants have visited the children’s oncological and haematological unit of Zhitomir Region Children’s Hospital recently.
The aim of the visit was to make inquiries about the hospital’s state of the matters.
We were cordially met by a chief physician, Victor Fedorovich. He told us about the situation in the hospital and its problems.

The main necessity is money. The hospital is catastrophically in need, especially the oncological and haematological unit where treatment is provided using expensive equipment and medicines.
During the visit we noted that it’s quite hospitably there. Doctors working in the unit do everything possible to support satisfactory conditions of the premises.
The most pressing problem of the unit is medicines to cure children with cancer. The treatment programs for children are mostly international, that’s why medicines in large part are also produced abroad.

The other big problem of the unit is equipment:

1) platelet concentrate preparation set СЕТС5L	100 units per year	estimated cost of 1 unit in Ukraine is Euro 200
2) intravenous infusion systems with filters	100 units per year	estimated cost of 1 unit is Euro 50
3) children’s apparatus for artificial pulmonary ventilation	1 unit	estimated cost is Euro 8 000
4) trepanation and biopsy sets	40-50 units	estimated cost of 1 unit is Euro 25
5) sternal puncture set	more than 100 units per year	estimated cost of 1 unit is Euro 25
6) measurement of blood pressure set (for children from 3 to 18)	5 units	estimated cost of 1 unit is Euro 20
7) medical bathtubs for children under 1 year	5 units	estimated cost of 1 unit is Euro 30
8) medical weigher with auxanometer (for children)	1 unit	estimated cost of 1 unit is Euro 600
9) syringes for infusion pumps (50,0 mg)	500 units	estimated cost of 1 unit is Euro 2

It should be noticed that the general condition of the unit is rather hard. Even work conditions need improvement. Doctors’ lounge (the room where doctors work) hasn’t been repaired for long; its furniture is completely ineligible for use.
Office equipment is absent. There’s no need even to mention about Internet access which is exceptionally necessary for doctors. They need to have up-to-date information about the new cancer treatment approaches. Faxes, printers and copiers are extremely needed.
Air-conditioning arrangement and bathroom renovation are those problems that make the unit unoperationable unless being solved. Highly toxic medicines are used for children’s treatment, that’s why physicians and paramedical personnel have to take a shower. But bathroom in the unit doesn’t suit for this. Despite the hospital is not very big it is short of money for the repairs.

It’s important to pay heed to the fact that children go through inpatient care for 6 months and longer, that’s why their parents need to have normal conditions for cooking and sanitary manipulation. To provide with this, the following items are to be bought for the unit:
? fridges with freezer case – 6 units;
? microwave ovens – 2 items;
? washing machine (professional – 15 kilos capacity);
? hand lamps for emergency lighting – 6 units;
? medical screen (to separate seriously ill patients from other kids) – 8 units;
? plastic bathtubs for children washing – 2 units;
? electric kettles – 2 units.

Also an important thing for the unit is folding beds in order to give parents the possibility to stay with their kids at night.
The wards in the hospital were constructed under classic hospital plans; typical room has 8 beds while there should be one or two children ill with cancer. There is the possibility to re-equip, but there is no money.
The floor is to be washed for approximately 20 times a day in such units, but it is in unsatisfactory condition.
It should be mentioned either that kids who are ill with leukemia merit an appropriate treatment and normal everyday necessities satisfaction. Oncological and haematological units in Kiev hospitals are in much better state due to the greater number of sponsors. When you look at the kids who are enduring unbearable pain you feel confused about the fact that only 80 kilometres separate them from normal human treatment.
